Giveaway for the Algonquin Book Club: In the Time of the Butterflies

Today’s Shelf Awareness, one of our favorite daily reads, gives a fantastic shout out to the Algonquin Book Club. There are only two weeks left until the first event with Julia Alvarez and Edwidge Danticat! To help kick things off, we’re giving away 20 copies of In the Time of the Butterflies to those who haven’t read it and who want to tune in to the live webcast on March 21, 7:00pm EST. All you have to do is leave a comment here or on our Facebook page to enter. We’ll notify the winners tomorrow morning. Good luck!

Be sure to check out our Algonquin Book Club site for an original essay by Alvarez about In the Time of the Butterflies, a description of the book, bios of the author and interviewer, a reading group guide, book club tips, and some culinary treats–wine and recipe pairings related to the book, including some recipes from Alvarez and recipe favorites of the historical characters in the book.

I am so glad that I found this site! I have been a fan of Algonquin books for so many years — I’m a bookseller since the days of B.Dalton, on through B&N then on to the now defunct Media Play. My life has moved beyond bookselling as a career, but my love of books and literature is as strong as ever and most of my disposable income still goes to books. Thanks for such a wonderful site! :)

I bought this book about two years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly! Then when my cousin-in-law told me she had never read it, I gave it to her when she was headed back to NY. So replacing it on my bookshelf would be fantastic!

I came across “In The Time of Butterflies” through the Algonquin Books, and immediately after reading the description, the book went on my “to-reads” list! I love books that take fact, and add fiction, in order for the reader to be able to relate to the voices of the characters. I would love to read this book, and would be extremely obliged (not to mention, psyched) to win this book.

I especially loved the author’s mention of Seamus Heaney’s poem “The Cure at Troy”, because the lines
“The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.”
are from some of my favorite lines ever written. I will, most assuredly, be tuning in on March 21st!

I have read and re-read all of Julia Alvarez’s works and am also a huge fan of Edwidge Danticat. The voice of the Caribbean diaspora has found eloquence and passion through these authors. I am looking forward to the interview and only wish that it were happening here in New York at the Algonquin to enjoy in person!

I would love a copy of “In the Time of the Butterflies” so that I may share it with others.

Thank you!
