What kinds of books does Algonquin Books publish?
We publish literary fiction and nonfiction, cookbooks, and lifestyle books (about family, animals, food, flowers, adventure, and other topics of interest). We don't publish poetry, genre fiction (romance, science fiction, etc.), or children's books.

What are your guidelines for manuscript submission?
Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced. Please include a check to cover postage for return of your manuscript should it be necessary that we
do so. Due to new postal regulations, please do not send stamps. We will try to respond to your submission in eight to ten weeks.

Does Algonquin hire editorial freelancers?
We do hire freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers on occasion. Qualified copyediting applicants will have at least two years of experience copyediting in the trade publishing industry, to include at least one year of experience copyediting literary fiction or nonfiction.
Qualified proofreading applicants will have at least one year of experience proofreading in the trade publishing industry.
Qualified indexers will have experience indexing books for trade publication (cookbooks, gardening books, biographies, etc.) and some experience with nonacademic indices.
Interested freelance applicants should send a resume, references, and a representative list of titles copyedited, proofread, or indexed for trade publishers to:

If I wish to reprint material published by Algonquin Books, do I need to seek permission?
All material published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill is protected under copyright law. If you wish to reproduce this material, written permission must be granted by the publisher. Please submit your permission request in writing.

What should I include in my permission request?
Your request should be as detailed as possible. Please include the title, author, and page numbers of the excerpt you wish to use. Beginning and ending quotes or a photocopy of our material, with excerpt clearly marked, are always helpful.
We also need to know where the material is to be reprinted. Include the title and publisher of the book or magazine, the publication date, print run, list price, distribution (market/countries), and any other information that would prove helpful in fulfilling your request.

Will there be a fee for permissions?
Each request received is evaluated on an individual basis. In most cases, a permissions fee is charged to compensate the author and publisher for use of the excerpted work.

How do I find an out-of-print book?
Algonquin's catalog only lists the books currently in print. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to help you in your search, and we do not keep a stock of out-of-print books. There are numerous resources both on the Web and in local bookstores to help you with your search.

How do I apply for an internship?
To apply for semester- or summer-long unpaid internships (publicity or editorial), send a resume and cover letter, specifying your availablity and which department you'd prefer, to:
